Codeine is an opiate modification that is prescribed by doctors for ailments that include minor to serious pain, chronic diarrhea, persistent cough and many others. Codeine is also one of the most widely abused drugs among young people due to the euphoric feeling it causes. It has also been highly publicized that popular rap artist Lil Wayne uses codeine to get high often referring to it as sizzurp or “sipping his syrup” Use of codeine to get high is also sometimes referred to as “leaning on syrup” because the person using it gets so intoxicated they are unable to stand up without leaning on something or someone.

People who abuse codeine or other drugs will often use street names to avoid suspicion of others around them who might be listening. There are many names for codeine when used alone and many more when codeine is mixed with other drugs. Street names are often influenced by famous users and popular music as we mentioned before or sometimes they are just variations or abbreviations of the drug’s commercial name or the appearance of the drug.

Codeine Street Names

When codeine is taken recreationally or abused it is most often in the form of codeine cough syrup mixed with soda, commonly referred to as sizzurp or syrup. Street names for codeine taken alone is Cody or schoolboy. Many people say that they best way to hide something is in clear sight, Cody is obviously just a play on the word codeine but it is also a very common first name for girls or boys. Young people will often say things like ” We went out with Cody last night and it was off the chain”. If you hear your kids saying things like this it can be an indicator that they are abusing codeine and could be putting themselves at risk for an overdose or an addiction.

Tylenol with Codeine Street Names

Codeine is often mixed with Tylenol and has varying strengths in which it is sold. Tylenol combinations can come as Tylenol with Codeine No. 1, 2, 3, or 4. One being the weakest and four being the strongest. For example, Number 1 contains 8 milligrams of codeine and isn’t very strong at all, whereas number 3 contains 30 milligrams and is often prescribed for more serious pain like dental pain or surgical pain. When abused or used illegally they are often referred to on the street as T and then the number, for example, T-threes represent Tylenol Number 3 and so on.

Mixing Codeine with Other Drugs and Alcohol

Codeine is often mixed with alcohol other drugs to heighten the effects. This has dangerous repercussions and is sending more and more people to the ER for treatment. Street names for codeine mixed with other drugs might include loads, pancakes and syrup, fours and doors. According to NIDA, “A variation of “purple drank” is promethazine-codeine cough syrup mixed with alcohol”. Fruit flavored candy is sometimes added as well for flavoring. The sweet flavors make it even more inviting for young people and increases chances of abuse.
